The independent council said yesterday that the government of former president Kim Dae-jung secretly paid $100 million to North Korea so that it would host the June 2000 North-South summit. The Dong-A ran a rather bizarre editorial ("Let US troops stay") that deserves the Marmot's attention, even if it's for a brief period.  Bang Hyung-nam, the editorial writer responsible for the piece, seems to be under the impression that American troops are in this country in order to funnel cash into local communities. The Joongang Ilbo is reporting that Kil Jae-gyeong, who was reported to have defected to the US this weekend, may actually be pushing up the daisies in Pyongyang (assuming they haven't eaten all the daisies by now). On a lighter note, yesterday was Teacher's Day in Korea.  Some students led me and several other instructors to a room that they had decorated for the occasion.  Then about 50 students sang the "teacher's song" and listened to each of us give a short speech.  After that we cut a cake and were presented with small gifts.
